about
A fisherman kept a workshop full of things collected over decades — wood, cloth, paper, steel, bits and knobs.
His grandson sat in the corner piecing them together. Rough stone. Unsanded wood.
Things that weren't meant to fit.
But in his hands they became the world.
stillfolk
We make restrained, material-led objects for children that invite return, carry quiet attention, and belong naturally in the home.
our name
In Scottish tradition, the still folk were the quiet ones— present but unseen, observing without being observed.
We're inspired by this tradition of patient observation and quiet presence.
Stillness. Patience. Attention.
materials and making
Materials are chosen for durability, tactility, and restraint.
Wood — Olive, pear, rose, beech. Warm, varied grain.
Soapstone — Soft, carvable. Marks on paper and wood.
Granite — Hard, dense, cold. Substantial weight.
Lava stone — Volcanic, porous. Lightweight despite size.
Beeswax — Natural, irregular form. Dark amber, honey scent.
Linen — Natural cloth. Raw edges, soft.
Paper — Mulberry, artisanal. Varied textures.
All materials non-toxic. All finishes food-safe.
philosophy
Stillfolk is shaped by a quieter view of childhood — that much of childhood happens in ways that are easy to overlook.
Not only in making, building, or pretending, but in quieter motions — arranging without outcome, covering and uncovering, testing weight, absorbing interruption, carrying one thing from room to room until it becomes part of daily life.
These are not lessons to be taught. They are modes of experience children enter naturally.
Our objects are made to stay open to them.
the grove
The grove is a quiet digital extension.
It is not required for the objects to make sense.
It functions as an archive — a place where small traces may be left and held over time.
Participation is optional.
a note on age and guidance
Objects are not age-graded.
They are designed to remain usable across years, rather than to be outgrown.
Adults are not required to explain or direct their use.
Children are trusted to find their own way.
